Although Alexei's family has been living on Earth for a couple generations, his mother's side of the family has telepathic aliens originating from the oceans of Europa, and when he was young they all moved to its surface. As a result of his lineage, he had very mild and controllable telepathic abilities. After moving to Europa he suffered from a nerve injury, and the medics there gave him an experimental serum which healed him, but it had the side effect of increasing his telepath abilities to an unbearable degree and now he can't turn them off.
After graduating from school he got a job as a janitor at biochemical laboratory on Earth, and eventually became a trainee lab technician. When the Terran Space Station opened its doors, the laboratory decided to move headquarters there. And even though Alexei doesn't particularly like space, he figured a change of scenery could do him good.
He enjoys the company of his human friends, but he prefers to hang out with Gli'x because their brains are so different that he can't read their thoughts. He's trying to find accommodations to cope with his telepath abilities and ways to control them.
